Motivation

In what ways can technology motivate students, especially with regard to literacy?

  1. In my classroom I have found that technology is a huge motivation for reading and writing, For writing, my class uses DANAs. When I first got them in my classroom every student asked everyday if they could use them! When I finally allowed them to use the DANA for a writing assignment, the quality of work I got from my students was far greater than when they use paper and pencil. As for reading, I just received reading pens for my students to use. They are more into the books they are reading and using the tools to work more independently.
    I think that technology is a big part in our everyday lives and when it can be infused into teaching, students are more likely to want to be involved in their own learning.

  2. I think technology gets students engaged. Especially at the lower levels, kids love gadgets and computer games. Having a computer or technology piece in a balanced literacy classroom allows students to listen to books, read, work on phonics/ writing, as well as work on vocab with computer software. I think it helps students to want to learn because it becomes fun to read.

Technology can motivate students to learn because it is what they know, it is what they are surrounded by so if we as teachers include that in our classrooms then that student will see a connection and want to learn. Technology gets them to interact and involved and it allows what they are learning to either be very visual or very hands on,which every learner benefits from. It is something that is engaging, fun, and entertaining and the same time they are learning and reading.

  4. We live in a society today that is filled with technology, and children are especially affected by it. Incorporating technology with literacy, is a great idea. As students are busy manipulating information and learning by doing, involvement in their own learning increases, along with their enthusiasm. They become active participants in the learning process. The learning environment is positively affected by the use of technology-based instructional strategies. By incorporating technology with literacy as a teacher you can have students listen to books/novels, spelling, vocabulary, and with other endless possiblities. By using technology with literacy or any content area, it's something fun but engaging.

  5. Technology somehow has the power to bring content to life. If you ask a student to read about meteorology from a textbook, he/she will most likely start snoring instantaneously (after some eye rolling). However, if the same material is presented on a computer screen with some eye-catching graphics, animations, and sound effects, kids would beg to learn about the weather! So what is this strange power that technology holds? Well, technology is recent. It's up to date and relevant to the lives of the students. As has been stated in previous comments, students can use technology to relate to their lives outside of school. I honestly think one of the best things a teacher can do for his/her students is to be caught up on the technologies of the day and incorporate those into lessons. Especially for literacy, there are hundreds and thousands of websites and assistive technologies to help kids learn. BookFlix and similar programs allow children to see the words while they hear them being read. This dual processing is often just what a student might need to get the hang of reading. Technology is a great way to connect school to children's outside lives!

  6. When students participate in hands-on, inquiry based learning, they develop lasting skills that often translate into higher levels of student achievement. As students are busy manipulating and analyzing data and learning by doing, involvement in their own learning increases, along with their enthusiasm. Students utilizing technology into the classroom promote higher-order thinking and inquiry based learning. Matching your child’s interest in technology with reading is essential to develop proficient readers. Also, incorporating educational sites, software and games that focus on stories, books, vocabulary, and writing will motivate children. Doing word puzzles, crosswords and other games can be easier to encourage online instead of on paper. An example of a helpful resource to motivate reluctant readers is www.BookAdventure.com. Book Adventure is a free, reading motivational Web site that motivates and engages readers.

  7. I think technology can be a positive motivation for students. I have seen some classrooms that use technology as a reward – the student can type their essay once they finish their rough draft. I also think that students are so used to being on computers that that is how they now learn. There are so many great websites students can use to help them improve their literacy skills. Students also enjoy using the smart board. The smart board has so many different functions that I think it will help students learn in a different way.

  8. Technology plays a large role in children’s lives. Most students, even those at the elementary level, are thoroughly familiar with the computer as well as the internet. When teachers integrate technology into their classroom instruction are much more likely to be motivated and interested in their learning. When students have the ability to participate in hands-on activities, such as those that are technology-based, they are more likely to remember what they learned because they were engaged in their learning. Also, because many students have access to computers at home, teachers can provide students with educational computer games or activities that allow them to continue building on their learning outside of the classroom.

  9. Technology can motivate students, especially reluctant readers and writers. Often students become bored with the standard paper and pencil routines, resulting in work of lower quality. When students are allowed to use word processors, DANAS, write-out-loud programs, or alphasmarts (I have found) students often produce work of higher quality. They enjoy something new and interesting. Technology can offer support to students that teachers are not always available to give. Technology also can work as a motivator for students, and there are many educational websites available. Students believe that they are just playing games online, when in reality they are receiving instruction in a different format.

  10. I think that technology motivates students because it is always changing and evolving. This creates an environment in which the student is in charge of how they take the next step in their own learning process. Since this environment and modality is so sought after by students it could be used as a great motivational incentive to participation and increase the quality of their work. Technology takes many forms and students often find it appealing to use any type as long as they get to use it. Sometimes all it take is the simple little things to motivate and get students involved in what is being taught and I think technology is an excellent resource to use.

  11. Just to piggy back off of what Katie L said... Other than the obvious (that technology is more meaningful and interesting to our students), technology can also be useful to add a little variety to one's lesson plans and activities. Being a teacher of an 8:1:1 program has provided me with many students who are unmotivated. I have seen firsthand on a daily basis how providing a technological choice can even make the most tedious assignments more bearable for the students (Ind. reading logs, journals etc... Often we think of technology as something that has to be "mind blowing” and entertaining to the students. Sometimes a simple choice such as a word processor is enough. It reminds me of my one student whose hand writing is practically unreadable. He would be the first to admit that he's ashamed of his writing, and that it looks atrocious. But, give him the computer, and he will add more content to his writing, take the time to at least look at the spelling errors through a spell check, and he even takes the time to decorate and add artistic details to his work. He would have done none of this if asked to complete the assignment in a paper and pencil format.

  12. Technology plays a big part of our lives whether in school or at home. Using technology in the classroom is a great way to keep all students motivated, especially those that struggle to read or write, or those that don't have computers at home. When using technology, it has to have meaning. What I find amazing is that many students claim they don't like to read or find it boring, but don't seem to have any difficulty reading stuff, such as emails or articles, on the internet. I think the portability of computers and the internet make it that much easier for students to increase their reading skills. The internet contains many different types of reading (papers, dictionary entries, letters, etc.) which students don't see as 'reading.'

  13. Children love technology. They are drawn to it. Techology gives them hands-on learning. It is visually stimulating and opens their learning environment in a way that nothing else can. Research is showing more and more, links between technology and increased academic achievement. Given the appropriate program and guidance, the use of technology can be motivating for many learners. At this point in our culture, it would be a disservice to our students not to include technology, as a tool in learning.

  14. Technology is not only essential to include due to its vast role in our society today (and therefore it prepares our students) but there is no question that it motivates students. My class is currently using the online reading program, KidBiz. It has really helped a bunch of my boys that were previously reluctant readers, become engaged in their learning. The non-fiction articles paired with the online activities make the learning/reading process much more attractive to them. I try to find ways to connect the articles to other teaching so that they remain engaged and see the benefits of the program. It gives them a boost when they can contribute to a conversation or make a connection to something that they learned by reading. There's also something to be said for the benefits that students get that go beyond just academics when they are able to use and manipulate various programs and forms of technology. It is great to see how many ways technology can be integrated into student learning now and how it lends itself to the education world.

  15. During clinic, my partner and I scanned a copy of a word-less picture book into a powerpoint presentation. We projected the book onto the screen and asked the students to collaboratively write text that coincided with the pictures. I was amazed at how into the activity the students were and I attribute that motivation/interest to the incorporation of technology. I sincerely think that the kids would not have been nearly as interested in the activity if it had been just looking at a book. I'm not trying to diminish the value of the book, but the lesson had a different affect given that they could see minute details in the picture (because it was so big) and visually see the addition of their text to the pictures themselves. I would do this lesson again in a heart beat, given the positive response that we had from the kids. They were super motivated and it was because technology was involved!

  16. I agree that technology in itself is a motivator to students. In the class I was doing my long term in the students loved to do their free writing on the computers. They would run to me when writing started to ask to go on the computers, whereas when told to write in a notebook with paper most students are not engaged. Writing has been one of the hardest subjects for me to get my students motivated to do, but when able to use the computers it is a different story. For one of my observation lessons this year I signed the Elmo projector out of the Greece learning center and used it sort of like Janet did and projected a book on it so that the whole class could see it. The students were amazed by this piece of technology and how they could see a book projected on a screen, so right there I had them. I think that many teachers do not utilize all the forms of technology available to them within their districts. I was very nervous to use this projector because it was very new to me, but I am glad I did because it was a definite motivator to the students.

  17. I think that technology can really motivate learners of all levels. I have worked with students who have gotten to use a Wii as a reward at the end of the week and they really responded to that. That same group also was fortunate enough to have a SMARTboard in their classroom. They really liked interacting with it and using it them selves. It literally brought the world to them. If I told them that they could use the board it was amazing how fast they would go from just sitting there unengaged to wanting to participate!

  18. I think that the use of technology really motivates students to learn and to explore. I have computers in my classroom, and even at the preschool level my students love to play games on the computer. There are many online educational games that are very benefical. It's a great way to motivate students to learn. One of the best teaching tools in the means of technology is the Smartboard. I currently have one in my classroom, and the students really enjoy play on it.
