Access to technology and through technology has multiple meanings. What aspects are particularly important to the reading specialist? To the student struggling to read, to write, or to communicate?

  1. For the reading specialist, technology can play a major role for supporting struggling readers and writers. Technology can assist students with many skills related to ELA that cause great difficulty. For example, when students are able to see print as they can hear it read to them can actually improve reading ability. This is where the Write-out-loud programs and bookshare programs benefit students. When used correctly, students can improve reading levels and build fluency. Other aspects such as the solo program for writing allows students to search for the appropriate words that fit into their writing. Using DANAS helps students communciate because they have functions that students get excited about and therefore they become motivated to share their work through beaming.

  2. I agree with Susan, that technology can greattly assit a student who struggles with writing or reading. I think to a reading specialist the ability to have students read or write using technology is an emerging skill a reading specialist will need. When used properly the student is engaged in the lesson but also getting appropriate support. I think it is tough for districts that lack the funds, or misuses the funds ignoring the technology that can greatly compliment a reading specialist's tools to assit students.

  3. Access to technology is more and more important in virtually every aspect of our lives. As educators, it is essential that we not only have access to technology, but that we become literate in how to utilize what technology has to offer us and our students. As we have discovered in class, there is an almost endless supply of websites and programs available that can support our work as teachers. Through technology we can support children of all skill levels. Effective communication, in every form, is one of the most important skills that we teach. Providing the tools that will assist students on the path to becoming strong, confident, engaged readers, writers and communicators, is made very effectively through the use of technology. It can give the struggling learner the extra support needed to feel successful.

  4. Almost every school district in America has access to technology. Even if technology is not placed directly in the classroom, most schools have computers available for student use. At the very least, public libraries provide computers and complimentary internet connections. Accessing the technology itself isn't always the hard part, though. Students can sit in front of a computer for hours on end and walk away more confused or frustrated than they started. Part of our job as teachers is to learn how to access certain resources through the technology we already have. Then, we must communicate this to our students, especially those struggling to read, write, or communicate. A reading teacher should be especially "fluent" (no pun intended) in working with technology and advocating for students who may need the extra help in these areas. Being able to effectively use the technologies available to teachers and students can sometimes be the determining factor in student success. It is worth taking the time to do!

  5. Every school district has access to some technology. Some districts have more technology than others but every district at least has computers for the students to use. I think that the reading specialist can use simple technology in different ways. For the districts that only have computers, the reading specialist can have students work on reading books from the computer, giving them a different reading experience. The students could also play reading games that would help to improve their reading level and give them more confidence in their reading. I think that students who struggle to read, write or communicate would also benefit from the use of a computer. They could use the computer to type things instead of writing them or use it to play educational games that would help them with communicating, reading or writing. For the districts that have more technology than others, students who have trouble writing could also use an alpha smart.

  6. Access to technology is very important, in every district there must be some access to technology. For the reading specialist there should be access to technology especially if it is going on in the classroom and that is what the student is used to. There are so many different programs that are online, or different simple tools that a reading specialist can use that is helpful for them with helping that particular student be able to read. The student that is struggling to read or write could be able to use the computer to write down all their ideas, they could listen to books on tape and can hear themselves talk maybe through a recording to help them with their communication skills. There are a lot of tools that can be useful for students that are struggling with their reading.

  7. Reading specialists now access to many sources of technology that will help students develop the skills necessary to become successful readers and writers. For struggling writers, reading specialists can use computer software programs, such as Draft Builder, to help students organize their ideas before writing, by creating outlines and concept maps that will allow them to prepare a draft. For struggling readers, vocabulary skills can be improved through programs such as Visual Thesaurus, which provides students with a web of meanings and visuals to help them better understand words. The reading specialist can use technology such as these to promote higher-order thinking and problem solving skills among struggling readers and writers.

  8. The reading specialist needs to be able to find and use new technologies that help readers and writers. I think that the reading specialists role is to be willing to incorporate and promote these technologies to help struggling readers and writers.
I feel that technology is also a huge way to communicate to students and parents. I think that having teacher websites available to students is a huge help to help them become independent in their work.
Technology also can be used to motivate students to want to read and write.

  9. I think that access to technology is very important to the students and the reading specialist who is teaching them. The two are a team and without the access to technology, lessons become boring and dated. The reading specialist can motivate the struggling reader, writer, or communicator to participate in activities that are more suited to their normal lifestyles which includes technology. First you need to have the access to technology not only for the student but the reading specialist. The second step would be to use it to its fullest potential and maximize the efficient and motivational qualities that it holds.

  10. As a reading specialist, access to technology is very important for struggling students. Technology can assist the student that struggles with reading, writing, and communicating. As we have discussed technology is a motivator to students, so just that is a help with a struggling student. Having some kind of tape or CD player is helpful for struggling readers because they can listen to and follow along with grade level texts. Being able to listen, helps the student with fluency and gives the student a chance to discuss higher level texts. The Co-Writer program, is another program we have discussed that helps struggling writers with their spelling and gives them word choices. This is also more of a motivator to a student that has difficulty writing or the student's writing is not legible. Technology can open the doors to getting a student to be able to communicate their work and be able to discuss various texts. It is important for the reading specialist to find a way to get all of this technology available to them.

It's important that the reading specialist has access to technology within their school district. There are so many different programs that are either online, downloadable reading programs etc. to help the struggling reader or writer. There is great technology out there that is interesting and interactive to both the teacher and the student. Technology is a great motivation for the students to use and to learn with.

  12. I agree with Susan, for reading specialist, incorporating technology into guided reading instruction plays a major role in supporting struggling readers and writers. The implementation of new technology present opportunities for teachers and reading specialists to work collaboratively to provide effective instruction for all students. Many new literacies that include digital and media technologies have evolved, preparing students to understand and adjust to these literacy demands. Reading specialists can extend traditional literacy experiences with comprehension of information on the Internet; effective use of search engines to locate information; evaluation of Internet sources; communication using e-mail and texts; and the use of word processing programs.

  13. Technology has many purposes when it is used appropriately in and out of the classroom. As with any teacher, it is beneficial for reading specialists to be familiar with the technologies that are available in order to help students with special needs. We often find that a simple form of technology can be the breakthrough for many students needs. Students who struggle to read or write, may find something as simple as a keyboard helps them to stay focused, or audio books that might help another student read a story and comprehend what was read. There is a great deal of technology that is motivational and engaging, which can be used to benefit all students.

  14. Technology is so important in the classroom, and to students lives. Reading teachers need to be aware of the current assistive technology that is available for various different kinds of disabilities. These can be low tech or high tech. There are so many software programs that can be tailored to students needs. Technology can make students feel more comfortable with reading. They will be more comfortable with reading and interacting with texts if they can spend less time focusing on their problems and more on reading and comprehending. Technology can also give students access to texts and resources that they would have access to otherwise.
